- W4385816981 abstract "The Arthur J. Dyer Observatory of Vanderbilt University was originally a professional research facility, but is now utilized for public outreach and education. The observatory’s history includes some well-known astronomers who engaged in serious observational research: Carl K. Seyfert, Robert H. Hardie, and John H. DeWitt, Jr. Seyfert is noted for his studies on a specific type of spiral galaxy with a small, bright nucleus displaying strong, broad emission lines in its spectrum. His paper, published in 1943, was the first to describe these galaxies that are now known as Seyfert Galaxies in his honor. Hardie was the co-discoverer of Pluto’s rotation period in 1955. Impact craters found on Pluto are named after scientists associated with studies of Pluto and a 28 km diameter crater on Pluto has been named for him. DeWitt was the first person to bounce radar waves off the Moon in 1946. This feat earned him the moniker, The Father of Radar Astronomy. All three astronomers were on the staff of Dyer Observatory during the years 1955–1960." @default.
