Rather than present an ethnography of this unprecedented religious community, Tazeen Ali focuses on the sermons or khutbahs and how the women use this discursive space to “engage scripture and cultivate interpretive authority” (231). While Islamic authority is often granted based on patriarchal ideas, Arabic knowledge, and formal Islamic training, women at the WMA gain authority by interpreting the scripture based on their lived experiences. Muslim women often face separate and unequal treatment in American mosques—they are forced to enter through a side door and must pray in the back or in an inadequate room.
