- W4385961962 abstract "Upon completion, participants will be able to identify what is or is not a good source of plant-based protein. Shifting diets towards plant-based proteins (PBP) with fewer animal proteins has health and environmental benefits. There is limited evidence to suggest college students have a good understanding of good source (GS) or not good source (NGS) of PBP. Knowledge of what plant-based food (PBF) qualifies as a GS of protein is important to ensure students are obtaining adequate protein intake. To assess college students’ ability to categorize six PBF choices as either GS or NGS of protein defined by meeting 10% of Daily Value. Students categorized six PBF (oats, potato, almond milk, Froot Loops®, black beans, lentils) as either GS or NGS of PBP. Participants were a convenient, random sample of college students in campus dining operations over a three-day period(N=149). Students’ ability to correctly categorize six PBF as either GS or NGS of PBP. Descriptive statistics for frequency of correct and incorrect responses were performed. One sample t-test was examined to determine if there was a statistically significant difference in correct versus incorrect responses for each PBF. Greatest frequency for incorrect responses were almond milk (43.6%), assumed incorrectly as GS of protein. There was a significant difference (p<.001 with 95%CI) in correct and incorrect responses for each PBF. Incorrectly assuming almond milk is a GS of PBP can indicate college students that drink more plant-based milks are missing out on essential nutrients and calories found in dairy milk. In making the switch towards PBP, more education is needed on PBF with comparable nutrient contents." @default.
