- W4385962012 abstract "Upon completion, participants will be able to identify potential physiological responses to cannabis and associated behavioral adaptations in patients with type 2 diabetes. Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) includes lifestyle, behavioral, and pharmacological interventions. Recently, researchers have explored whether cannabis usage may yield therapeutic effects on T2DM. A scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA guideline on the potential therapeutic uses of cannabis in patients with T2DM. The keywords cannabis”,” type 2 diabetes mellitus”,” cannabinoids”, “nutrition”, “obesity”, and “exercise behavior were used in PubMed search to identify relevant clinical trials and observational studies. A total of 66,037 references were found, of which 53 were included within the scoping review. Cannabis and its compounds may impact hyperinsulinemia through increase insulin sensitivity by down-regulating cytokines TNF-α, JNK/SAPK, Interleukin-4 (IL-4), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), and modulating Interleukin-8 (IL-8), Interleukin-10 (IL-10), Interleukin-12 (IL-12), nuclear factor-kappa β (NF-κβ), and Interferon gamma (IFN-γ). Down-regulation of these cytokines has shown increased glucose uptake by cells and improved glycemic control. IL-6 is heavily implied within β cell maturation which also aids in glycemic control. IL-10 may impact immune intolerance, while cell mediated immunity relates to cytokines: IL-12, IFN-γ, TNF-α. I-4 activity has been observed within humoral and IgE immunity. Endocannabinoids OEA, N-linoleoylethanolamine, AEA, and 2-AG were found to modify food seeking behaviors, enhance motivation to engage in exercise, and modulate perception related to exercise. Cannabis use showed decreased occurrence of overweight or obesity, sustained neurological integrity, and improved emotion regulation. More research is needed to examine the behavioral and neurophysiological impact of cannabis use in patients with T2DM." @default.
