- W4385962223 abstract "To systematically evaluate the efficacy of vitamin C on prevention and progression and severity of COVID infection. Emerging studies suggest that vitamin C (VitC) could prevent or treat COVID. However, few studies systematically evaluate the efficacy of vitamin C on COVID prevention and treatment. This study aims to systematically investigate the efficacy of supplementation with VitC and COVID risk, progression, and severity. Relevant studies published from October 1, 2012, to October 1, 2022, on CNKI, Wanfang, China Biomedical Literature Database, PubMed, and Embase were searched and selected based on the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Relevant literature or evidence was comprehensively evaluated with methods and standards recommended by the WHO. A total of eight studies were included, including four randomized controlled trials, one cohort study, and three case-control trials. Adequate dietary VitC intake may be associated with a reduced risk of COVID infection, but currently, insufficient evidence supports that VitC supplementation could decrease the COVID incidence in the healthy population. A low VitC level may be associated with the severity of COVID infection, and intravenous administration of high doses of vitamin C in severe and critical COVID patients may improve the symptoms and progress of COVID. The grade of comprehensive evaluation is B. Although insufficient evidence supports that VitC could be a prophylaxis for COVID in healthy populations, administration of high doses of vitamin C may improve the symptoms and progress in severe and critical COVID patients. Since limited evidence is based on small samples, more high-quality clinical trials are needed to further assess the efficacy of VitC in preventing and treating COVID." @default.
