- W4385962238 abstract "Upon completion, participants will be able to determine the relationship between Division-III athletes’ hydration knowledge and beliefs, and beverage choices before, during, and after exercise. Dehydration hinders athletic performance, yet is common in athletes. The electrolyte and carbohydrate composition of sports drinks promote hydration more effectively than water. This study aimed to determine the relationship between hydration knowledge, and beliefs, and beverage choices of athletes. Division-III athletes (n=37, 54%male, 76%white) from five teams (men’s and women’s basketball, women’s lacrosse, baseball, and men’s and women’s track and field) completed a survey including demographic measures; hydration knowledge and beliefs scales; and an assessment of beverage choices before, during, and after exercise. Participants’ hydration knowledge and beliefs were compared by beverage choice (water or sports drinks). All athletes reported drinking before, during, and after practice. Most athletes (62%) consumed sports drinks (with or without water) before practice, 38% drank solely water. T-Tests indicated that there was no significant difference in knowledge (p=0.241) or belief (p=0.942) scores between those who consumed sports drinks versus solely water before exercise. Most athletes (62%) consumed water during practice, 38% consumed a sports drink. Hydration knowledge and belief scores did not differ significantly by beverage consumed during exercise (p=0.220, and 0.416, respectively). The majority (65%) consumed sports drinks after exercise, only 35% consumed solely water. Hydration knowledge and belief scores did not differ significantly by beverage choice after exercise (p=0.767 and p=0.891 respectively). There were no significant associations between hydration knowledge and beliefs, and athletes’ beverage choices, suggesting that there are other factors that influence athletes’ beverage choices. Future studies should aim to identify these additional factors." @default.
