- W4385962407 abstract "Reviewed by: The Meadows by Stephanie Oakes Natalie Berglind Oakes, Stephanie The Meadows. Dial, 2023 [448p] Trade ed. ISBN 9780593111482 $20.99 E-book ed. ISBN 9780593111499 $10.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R* Gr. 9-12 At thirteen, Eleanor was chosen by the algorithm to join a facility for the best and brightest, where, alongside other girls, she will learn how to be a good homemaker and repress her attraction to other girls. Five years later, Eleanor works as an adjudicator for the Quorum, checking in on reformed girls from the facilities—only she's fabricating the reports of women who haven't adjusted to heterosexuality, and her one purpose left is finding Rose, an allegedly deceased girl from the Meadows. Unfortunately for Eleanor, nothing stays hidden from the algorithms for long, and it's only a matter of time before she gets caught. In alternating chapters between past and present, Oakes doles out pieces of Eleanor's history in tantalizing fashion, but she remains compassionate to her protagonist's trauma, as Eleanor internalizes her guilt even as she does what she can to protect others like her. The dystopic future is extremely believable, wherein algorithms are used to pre-select kids who show subversion to traditional gender roles, and the truth of the facility will occur to readers faster than it does to Eleanor, which makes the insidious nature of the psychological manipulation employed against the girls even more gut-wrenching. While the story has grim parallels to real legislation against trans youth, the resistance movement Eleanor seeks out is unabashedly queer and full of hope, with a resounding message that queer people will always exist, always find each other, and always fight back. This beautiful and important book is dystopian YA at its finest, and its themes of queer resilience and community will resonate for many years to come. An author's note about conversion therapy and U.S. politics that strip away the rights of queer youth is included as well as a list of mental health resources.
