- W4385979560 abstract "Abstract The term “anomie,” a combination of the Greek words “without” (a‐) and “law” ( nomos ), was introduced into social science by Émile Durkheim in order to characterize a societal state in which norms and values of a society lose their regulating and integrating capacity. He adopted the term from Jean‐Marie Guyau, a French philosopher, and made it into one of the most prominent concepts in sociology. Durkheim puts anomie down as the cause of accelerated social change which occurred historically, for instance, during the Industrial Revolution. In those times, traditionally stable norms and values began to unravel and were not immediately replaced by new ones. Anomic societies are no longer capable of meeting the needs of people or to limit their aspirations. Such societies fail in regulating and integrating social processes. The social fabric undergoes a process of change when the social volume (such as population growth) or the social density (indicated, for instance, by the degree of urbanization) is altered. This process of change was characterized by Durkheim as also leading to a modification in social solidarity. Over a long‐term perspective, a society develops from a traditional state where there is a great deal of similarity between its members (mechanic solidarity) to a modern, complex system that is based on specialization of work and the fact that people complement each other (organic solidarity). Anomie, however, is not a cause of social change. It is the other way round: if social change happens too fast, anomic tendencies occur that lead to a moral void or states of disorder. Durkheim proposed that people got disoriented, isolated, or depressed in such a situation of anomie, leading to adverse effects such as indicated by higher suicide rates." @default.
