- W4385991317 abstract "The moral status of the human embryo is a central formal concept in the bioethical repertoire and, at the same time, a cultural construct of great symbolic weight within the social mindscape, shaped not only by bioethical considerations but also by the narratives propounded by a series of institutional and social agents, most prominently the scientific community and the churches of certain moral-religious beliefs. Counterpoised are the frame on the embryo derived from the minimalistic, analytical, value-free, and instrumental perspective characteristic of scientific research, and the frame sustained, with diverse voices, by the churches and their doctrinal traditions, incorporating an ontology and values that emphasize continuity and accord the dignity of an individual human being to any human biological entity postfertilization. This chapter addresses the ethical problems associated with the creation and uses of early embryos for biomedical research, particularly for obtaining stem cells, from the angle of people’s views, values, and attitudes toward the embryo in advanced and diverse societies, a social science perspective complementary to the formal normative work in bioethics. Although the landscape of beliefs and values is pluralistic regarding the nature of the embryo and the beginning of individual human life, the dominant ontological valence in most societies analyzed is one of equivalence to a human being, due to the protection and respect attendant on that condition. This vision is in flux and contested by the scientific community. The preferred course of action advocated by scientific institutions to bridge the gap between science views and people’s perceptions of the early embryo is improvement in the public’s knowledge about genetics and human development. But much more than scientific literacy would be needed to significantly reshape the prevailing view, since at bottom the sharp divergences existing stem not just from knowledge, but mainly from values and worldviews, and could be reduced effectively only by an open and frank dialog among the various agents and institutions." @default.
