- W4385991341 abstract "Child compliance is a key foundation for the development of self-regulation. While some degree of noncompliance is part of healthy development for most children, frequent and persistent noncompliance can lead to oppositional defiant disorder. Compliance is therefore an important target for intervention, and intervening early in childhood may prevent stable trajectories of noncompliance and dysregulation from emerging. This chapter provides information on three core components of evidence-based interventions that clinicians can use when working with parents to increase child compliance. These core components include strategies for (1) increasing the positive reinforcement of compliance; (2) the provision of effective instructions; and (3) calm and consistent use of time-out for noncompliance. In this chapter, we describe how clinicians can implement these strategies within a brief parenting intervention, including how to introduce the strategies, procedures for in-session skills training, suggestions for homework tasks, and approaches for trouble-shooting challenges. We also examine the theory and practice of these components and outline important clinical processes for optimizing their implementation." @default.
