- W4385991381 abstract "Cellulose is the most abundant biopolymer on our planet, as it is synthesized by grass, almost all plants, most algae and fungi, and many bacterial species. Because of its abundance, it becomes one of the low-cost biomaterials that can be extensively used in the field of tissue engineering. Since it is obtained from natural sources, it is quite biocompatible and also possesses good mechanical strength. However, cellulosic biomaterials do not degrade easily in animals as they lack the enzyme that breaks the abundant β (1→4) linkages present in cellulose. Nevertheless, cellulose is known to have easily tunable properties when it is chemically modified and/or blended with other polymers. Thus, cellulose has been investigated for a wide range of tissue engineering applications. This review summarizes some of the recent technological developments in the field of cellulose-based tissue engineering. Towards the end, it also focuses on some of the challenges that need to be overcome to enable the clinical translation of cellulose-based-tissue-engineered constructs." @default.
