This condition demands the need for a drug delivery approach so as to target the release of bioactive molecules. To achieve this, various natural and synthetic polymers have been examined. Natural polymers like pectin, chitin, sodium alginate, cellulose derivatives, and starch are more preferred due to their natural availability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and non-toxicity. This book chapter focuses on pectin-based drug delivery systems. Pectin is a polysaccharide obtained from citrus peels or apple pomace when treated under mild acidic conditions. Depending on the degree of esterification, there are two types; high methoxyl pectin and low methoxyl pectin. The characteristic features like mucoadhesiveness, colonic degradation, and gelling properties make pectin an ideal candidate for the fabrication of drug delivery devices. The principle use of pectin in the development of a formulation is primarily related to colon-based drug delivery. As pectin formulations are unaffected by the upper gastrointestinal tract secretions, the drug release process particularly occurs in the lower gastrointestinal tract, that is, at the colon region. This chapter deals with the various pectin-based drug delivery systems such as nasal inserts, pellets, wafers, microspheres, nanoparticles, hydrogels, films, and tablets in the field of biomedicine." @default.
