- W4386042126 abstract "We thank Adepoju and Imoyera for their letter. We agree that unvaccinated adults have a significant increased risk of being in a traffic crash compared with vaccinated adults, even after accounting for various other factors that may influence risk.1Redelmeier DA Wang J Thiruchelvam D COVID vaccine hesitancy and risk of a traffic crash.Am J Med. 2023; 136: 153-162Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (6) Google Scholar The letter speculates that essential workers might be prone to crashes due to work requirements; however, most traffic crashes are unrelated to work.2Mitchell RJ Bambach MR Friswell R Work and non-work-related vehicle crashes: the contribution of risky driving practices.Saf Sci. 2014; 68: 65-72Crossref Scopus (19) Google Scholar,3Charbotel B Martin JL Chiron M Work-related versus non-work-related road accidents, developments in the last decade in France.Accid Anal Prev. 2010; 42: 604-611Crossref Scopus (38) Google Scholar Additionally, our study shows the risks are accentuated at night, contrary to normal work hours. The letter highlights that our study examined serious crashes that were medical emergencies and did not examine minor events that caused no injuries. An analysis of minor events, however, is unlikely to yield opposite results.4Evans L Safety-belt effectiveness: the influence of crash severity and selective recruitment.Accid Anal Prev. 1996; 28: 423-433Crossref Scopus (102) Google Scholar,5Elvik R Risk of road accident associated with the use of drugs: a systematic review and meta-analysis of evidence from epidemiological studies.Accid Anal Prev. 2013; 60: 254-267Crossref PubMed Scopus (222) Google Scholar The letter states “the study only focused on drivers, passengers, and pedestrians involved in road traffic accidents.” This is inaccurate because our study also included individuals with no events. Moreover, the term “accident” was avoided as unduly trivializing or fatalistic.6Goddard T Ralph K Thigpen CH Iacobucci E Does news coverage of traffic crashes affect perceived blame and preferred solutions? Evidence from an experiment.Transp Res Interdiscip Perspect. 2019; 3100073Google Scholar The letter lists road, vehicle, and driver factors that may add to risks. Nonhuman factors were not measured in our study; however, there is no reason to assume large differences in such external factors. Driving habits, of course, could explain the risks.7Dingus TA Guo F Lee S et al.Driver crash risk factors and prevalence evaluation using naturalistic driving data.Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2016; 113: 2636-2641Crossref Scopus (589) Google Scholar,8Wang J Redelmeier DA Vaccine hesitancy and traffic deaths: ecological analyses.J Gen Intern Med. 2023; 38: 1783-1785Crossref Scopus (2) Google Scholar The early COVID lockdown in 2020 led to less driving and lower risks in Canada; however, the savings were transient, and subsequent traffic risks were similar to those in 2019. The letter, therefore, misquotes initial data from Canada and the United States.9Redelmeier DA Zipursky JS Pedestrian deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic.Am J Lifestyle Med. 2021; 17: 276-279Crossref Scopus (5) Google Scholar The letter is correct that lockdowns in some other countries often resulted in less mobility and fewer traffic deaths initially.10Yasin YJ Grivna M Abu-Zidan FM Global impact of COVID-19 pandemic on road traffic collisions.World J Emerg Surg. 2021; 16: 51Crossref Scopus (64) Google Scholar Our study, however, occurred in 2021 when lockdowns had mostly lifted and traffic risks were comparable with prepandemic trends.11International Transport ForumRoad Safety Annual Report 2022. OECD Publishing, Paris2022https://www.itf-oecd.org/road-safety-annual-report-2022Crossref Google Scholar Our study did not examine India or Greece; however, the letter mischaracterizes opinion surveys from North America. Those surveys excluded traffic fatalities and described only how respondents self-reported less risky driving early in the pandemic.12Vanlaar WGM Woods-Fry H Barrett H et al.The impact of COVID-19 on road safety in Canada and the United States.Accid Anal Prev. 2021; 160106324Crossref Scopus (31) Google Scholar The letter misrepresents our study by asserting “Individuals who were vaccinated were considered unvaccinated for the first 14 days after vaccination.” This is incorrect. The study did not test immunity and most crashes occurred months after vaccination. The letter speculates that misclassification could nullify the results of our study. Overall, a total of 705 of the 1682 crashes (42%) would need to vanish before the traffic risks would be equalized. This degree of misclassification is implausible. The letter is correct that medical research has limitations. Scattered misquotations that also propagate through social media, however, are difficult to refute. We suggest the relationship between COVID vaccine status and traffic risks merits more thought. None." @default.
