- W4386080620 abstract "This paper narrows down the focus of the study of ritual activities for Hellenistic rulers to the in-depth analysis of a single textual document: a decree (IvP I 246) by which the city of Pergamon established cultic honours for King Attalos III upon his return from a victorious military campaign. Drawing on recent reassessments of the decree and of its historical background, this study deals with the theme of the embeddedness of political and religious discourse in the material dimension of sacred space and ritual performances. It does so in two steps. Firstly, a detailed analysis is provided of the various honours granted to Attalos at the moment of his triumphal entering in the city and on the occasions of the later commemorations of this event. In this respect, particular attention is paid to the contextualization of Attalos’ new honours in the sacred topography and calendar of the city as well as to the role of civic magistrates and priests in the administration of these honours. All these data are combined with textual analysis to flesh out the way Attalos’ victory and euergetic attitude towards the citizens of Pergamon were conceptualized by institutions and the memory of these merits was granted a space within civic traditions. A civic strategy emerges from this analysis, associating the king’s military success with Asklepios Soter and his extra-muros sanctuary, which was deeply intertwined with the memory of the military exploits of the dynasty, while the civil aspects of royal euergesia are spatially and ritually linked to the sphere of competence of Zeus Soter, with his sanctuary and altar at the upper agora, a focal point for the city’s political life and identity. The second part of the paper more directly deals with the question of the hierarchical relationship between traditional gods and new human honorands, challenging the assumption that such relationship can be understood in static and ontological terms. The case study of the offerings accomplished to Attalos on the altar of Zeus on the agora allows us to single out a variety of different but non-contradictory ritual solutions, by which the relationship between the king and the god can flexibly shift between honours describing the king as a human leader protected by the gods of the city and others acknowledging him as the holder of a salvific power ritually equated to the power of the gods." @default.
