- W4386102279 abstract "The COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic has stoked interest in researching not only the techno-economic crisis that it has caused but also the effects which occurred due to such medical emergencies on our environment. An attempt has been made to critically review detailed overview of different aspects of environmental issues like elevated levels of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), increasing rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), high levels of waste and microplastics, growing numbers of coinfecting microbes, and the potential endocrine disruptive (ED) effects to understand the current health of our environment in this post-COVID-19 era. The pandemic led to elevated levels of these contaminants in the environment, which further act as a vector for AMR augmentation. As prevention of diseases, patient care, and self-hygiene have taken precedence, antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) efforts have been pushed back. It was noticed that among COVID-19 patients, the prevalences of bacterial, fungi, other viruses, protozoa, and helminth were 0.2–51 %, 0.3–49 %, 1–22 %, 2–15 %, & 0.4–15 %, respectively. Such co-infecting microbes can be resistant to residual PPCPs. Further, clinical and other experimental evidence for many newer compounds is very scarce and will require further research. Our review briefly suggests that: i) Misdiagnosis of co-infections, and fear-driven stocking of PPCPs aggravated the problem. ii) Post-COVID-19, antimicrobial resistance & endocrine disruptive chemicals have increased. iii) Lifestyle changes like increased online shopping, package food has led to more plastic wastes. iv) AI/ML use is necessary for predictive modelling of upcoming threats from COVID related waste. and, v) New estimates are needed for the future casualties related to spiked AMR, EDCs, and PPCPs. We recommend AMS, effective waste management, governmental cum regulatory frameworks, and scientific research be enhanced for minimizing the impact and creating better preparedness towards such events like COVID-19." @default.
