- W4386289975 abstract "Owe to its super high angular resolution, the space-based optical interferometry will become a unique tool for the terrestrial planet detection and characterization. In the optical interferometric system, the instrumental polarization caused by the folding mirrors in each branch plays an important role for the formation of interference fringe, which will impact the imaging quality of the system finally. In this paper, the instrumental polarization and the resulting image quality degradation for a typical Fizeau interferometer is investigated by a self-developed telescope polarization simulation tool. The purpose of this work is to show the necessity of polarization analysis and optimization of the optical system when a high-performance interferometry is pursued. We have developed a vector imaging simulation tool for telescope based on the technical of polarization ray tracing. By which, the polarized point spread functions and optical transfer functions are calculated for the target systems. The results show that the imaging quality of symmetric three- and six-apertures systems is sensitive to the instrumental polarization. An arbitrary design of optical configuration may lead to decrease of contrast of interference fringes, thus decrease the modulation transfer function in the middle and high spatial frequency regions. Generally, the influence of instrumental polarization on the imaging quality of interferometric system must be considered in the design phrase, whether for astronomical observation or remote sensing of the earth. Through careful polarization design, the impact of instrument polarization on imaging quality can be eliminated, so that the limit angular resolution can be achieved." @default.
