- W4386320610 abstract "NSW contains approximately 90 cavernous karst environments ranging from relatively small outcrops with limited karstification to extensive areas with well-developed features and cave systems. These are situated in a diverse range of landscapes with varied geological and geomorphological features, systems and processes, and include some of the world's oldest limestone cave systems. Fossil assemblages within the limestone provide rare insight into past organisms, while subfossil deposits within caves include modern-day species that are regionally extinct and extinct species including marsupial megafauna. Show caves at Jenolan, Wombeyan and Yarrangobilly are renowned for their diverse array of speleothems. NSW karst environments also provide important habitat for biodiversity; their surfaces host rare and endemic flora and fauna, whilst belowground, caves shelter cave-dependant bats and invertebrates. Many NSW karst environments have rich cultural associations that include special meaning to Indigenous people and historic heritage linked with Australian folklore and early cave tourism." @default.
