- W4386323786 abstract "Early primates emerged just before the extinction of dinosaurs some 66 million years ago as small nocturnal mammals with a well-developed visual system that was highly dependent cortical processing. Early primates subsequently branched into several major lines of evolution and over 200 current species. These species vary greatly in lifestyle, size, brain size and organization, and cognitive abilities, including humans having language and advanced tool use. Yet, all primates have retained basic features of brain organization from early ancestors, including the multistep processing of sensory information for guiding behavior. Measures of cognitive abilities have been related to the more easily obtained measures of brain size and brain size related to body size, and more recently to numbers of cortical neurons, and to features of cortical organization. Humans are distinguished by their impressive cognitive abilities, as the most complexly organized neocortex of all primates. Human-like brains likely emerged in our ancestors within the last 300,000 years." @default.
