- W4386324166 abstract "The cerebral cortex is the evolutionary most recent part of the brain and allows higher cognitive functions, which rely on a tremendous diversity of neuron types organized into precise circuits. For these neuron types to emerge, both cell-intrinsic (i.e., independent of the environment) and cell-extrinsic (i.e., input-dependent) developmental programs need to coordinate to allow the reproducibility of the system while retaining a certain degree of flexibility to adapt to the environment. Intrinsic and extrinsic processes are intertwined and dynamically regulated during development, as intrinsic cell properties control how cells respond to input, and extrinsic events can trigger long-lasting intrinsic changes. In this chapter, we summarize the intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms allowing the emergence of cortical areas, and then focus on how specific cell types (from progenitors to different types of excitatory and inhibitory neurons) have distinct susceptibilities to input during precise developmental windows." @default.
