- W4386324581 abstract "Small-size gold clusters protected by organic ligands have arisen great interest as prototypical systems for fundamental studies on quantum size effects and as a building block of nanoscale devices. We have investigated the evolution of geometrical structures of glutathionate (SG) protected gold clusters, Au n ( SG ) m with n = 10∼55, by means of 197 Au Mössbauer spectroscopy. Detailed analysis of the 197 Au Mössbauer spectrum of Au 25 ( SG ) 18 based on the molecular structure of Au 25 ( SC 2 H 4 Ph ) 18 , enabled us to estimate quantitatively the numbers of gold atoms coordinated by different numbers (0, 1, and 2) of SG ligands for all the Au n ( SG ) m clusters. In the case of Au 10 ( SG ) 10 , all the gold atoms are bonded to SG ligands, indicating –Au– SG – cyclic structures. A catenane structure was proposed for Au 10 ( SG ) 10 . At n = 15, gold atoms bonded to a single SG ligand appeared, suggesting the formation of small gold clusters. At n ≈ 25, a single gold atom without the SG ligation appeared, which is consistent with the formation of an icosahedral Au 13 core protected by six staples, – SG –[Au– SG –] 2 . At n = 38, the number of Au atoms without the SG ligation increases from one to two, and the 197 Au Mössbauer spectrum is consistent with the face-fused bi-icosahedral Au 23 core. In this way, we investigated the structural evolution of Au n ( SG ) m from n = 10 to n ≈ 55 based on 197 Au Mössbauer spectroscopy. Moreover, we elucidated the location of Pd atom in Au 24 Pd 1 ( SC 12 H 25 ) 18 by means of 197 Au Mössbauer spectroscopy, comparing with the 197 Au Mössbauer spectrum of Au 25 ( SC 12 H 25 ) 18 ." @default.
