- W4386332956 abstract "Diatom biogeography is important in understanding the distribution of taxa with respect to phylogenetics. A data set of freshwater diatom genera per clade was used to determine the distribution of those diatom clades worldwide. Shortest tour for all genera as well as shortest tours per clade were analyzed heuristically via the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). Naviculales, Cymbellales, Fragilariales, Thalassiosiroids, and Achnanthidiales were determined to be the most widely distributed clades from continent to continent. Bacillariales, Rhizosoleniales and Thalassiophycidales had no endemics and occurred on more than one continent. The remaining clades included endemics as well as a presence of genera on more than one continent. When characterized using the Köppen climate classification system, most clades had a large presence on North America, Australasia and Asia with a lesser presence on South America, Africa, Europe, and Antarctica. Freshwater diatom distribution was associated with climate. Endemics were mostly present in the Naviculales and on Asia. Distance decay of composite distance gradation from cosmopolitanism to endemism was demonstrated for all genera with respect to ecological similarity. The phenotypic novelty of a biraphid trait as a result of phenotypic integration was associated with endemic genera." @default.
