- W4386371569 abstract "Life Support Device Receives FDA Approval Abbott has received two clearances from the Food & Drug Administration for its CentriMag life support system. The system's blood pump had previously been approved for use up to six hours, but this has been expanded to allow for longer usage by physicians who are assessing patients who require extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The device provides physicians time for critical care decision-making for patients whose hearts are not able to pump enough blood on their own, according to a company press release. (Abbott. April 25,2023; https://bit.ly/3pmcNmj.) The life support device has been used to treat patients who have had open heart surgery and COVID-19 and for those who require ECMO support. Abbott also received clearance for a multisystem life support pack that includes the blood pump and an oxygenator intended for short-term cardiopulmonary support. The preconnected pack reduces the number of steps taken by physicians when providing critical care. Theranica's neuromodulation device is a physician-prescribed, drug-free alternative to traditional migraine treatments that users wrap around the upper arm, where the device activates internal pain management by dispensing remote electrical modulation (REN) to the nervous system. A total of 248 participants were instructed to use either REN with the Nerivio wearable or a placebo every other day for eight weeks as part of a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Participants using Nerivio experienced four fewer migraine days per month from baseline compared with the placebo group, who experienced 1.3 fewer migraine days per month, reported the company. (PRNewswire. Feb. 28, 2023; https://bit.ly/3XvVZ8O.) The treatment lasts 45 minutes. The drug-free device is an alternative pain management system for migraines that has no adverse effects, making the device a viable option for adolescents and pregnant individuals, who are reluctant to take medication due to concerns about effects on the fetus, a Medscape article reported. Diagnostic Nanotechnology for Respiratory Infection A startup from McGill University, Beeta Biomed, Inc., has developed a prototype diagnostic and molecular PCR test called QolorEX for detecting respiratory infections such as influenza A and B and COVID-19. The test device uses colorimetric detection of RNA to identify viruses from a saliva sample and injects light-excited hot electrons from the surface of a nanoplasmonic sensor to increase the speed of the test, reported Medscape. (June 20, 2023; https://bit.ly/3XzVr1Z.) The user inserts the cartridge with the saliva sample into an imaging system that then delivers results automatically to a computer or smart device within 15 minutes without the need to ship samples to a lab for testing. The system does not require users to mix reagents manually, reducing the risk of user error that could yield false results. The device can detect different variants of H1N1 influenza and SARS-CoV-2. The device detected positive COVID-19 cases with 99% specificity in a preclinical test of 33 participants, according to a company release. (McGill. April 18, 2023; https://bit.ly/435gFWu.) The developmental team said it anticipates partnering with a manufacturing company to make the test commercially available, and said they see the potential for it to detect bacterial infections and even cancer in the future.
