- W4386388290 abstract "The number of short-term medical mission trips (SMTs) to low- and middle- income countries (LMICs) continue to increase. A popular destination for SMTs is Guatemala. The benefits of a non-governmental organization (NGOs) performing SMTs must be assessed with the possibility of the harm that might occur with unstructured SMTs. The following paper addressed patients’, local staff, and medical students’ perception of a SMT and provides recommendations for NGOs based on our experience and a review of the literature. Two interview guides interviewed twenty-five Guatemalan individuals (15 patients, 7 staff surgeons, and 3 medical students) via 20 semi-structured questions. The questions were developed according to previous literature review and research of similar SMTs. The interview schedule was verbally administered in Spanish during the postoperative period by a trained member of the team and responses were recorded. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and organized. A theoretical thematic analysis method was adopted as previously described. A review of the literature identified four systematic reviews on SMTs, which were compared to the present analysis. Twenty-seven elective operations were performed at Hospital National de San Benito (HNSB) in El Peten, Guatemala during a SMT. Twenty-five interviews (all from Guatemalan participants) were conducted with a 100% response rate (all participants asked to be interviewed agreed to participate). In general, we found that 60% patients vs. 100% of staff were informed about the SMT. Only one medical student did not know about the SMT. There was a 100% agreement of a perception of a good action by patients, staff, and medical students. There were excellent bidirectional educational opportunities between visiting and local surgeons. All students perceived the SMT as an excellent educational activity. There was a 100% satisfaction from patients, local staff, and medical students. Our review of the literature identified key elements for NGOs for planned SMTs to avoid detrimental consequences for those in the receiving end. With the increasing number of SMTs to LMICs, the benefit of an NGO must be carefully balanced by the potential unintended harm, which includes, post-operative complications, poor patient satisfaction, and tension on the health care system and overall impact of the SMT. It is imperative that NGOs constantly assess their impact on the SMT with emphasis on patients and local staff such that modification can be made to suit the needs of the site." @default.
