- W4386389556 abstract "This chapter summaries the current methods by which the presence and extent of articular hypermobility can be measured numerically. Several methods have been developed for the assessment of the extent and severity of Generalised Joint Hypermobility (GJH). The first method was proposed by Carter & Winkinson in 1964, who considered five articular movements. This was followed in 1970 by a method proposed by Beighton & Horan, using six articular movements in a family with autosomal dominant transmissionof GJH. Thereafter in 1973, Beighton, Solomon & Soskolne suggested an approach that considered five movements, scored from zero to nine points, with a score of 4 or more being indicative of GJH. In 2003, Hakim and Grahame developed a simple, reproducible self-report questionnaire as a tool to investigate JH retrospectively. This approach can be used to complement the clinical evaluation of chronic and diffuse pain syndromes where JH is sometimes not noticed. It is also applicable to those individuals who have progressively lost GJH due to increasing ageAge i. In 2005, Lamari et al. analysed the rangeRange i of articular movements of 1120 children of both sexes between the ages of 4 and 7. These children exhibited significant changes in body composition in this ageAge i range. The authors suggested that this process probably reflected the redistribution of subcutaneous body fat and muscle tissue. Boys have greater body density than girls, and, consequently, have a lower percentage of body fat. These observations also justify the conclusion of previous studies that females have greater jointJoint i mobility then males at any specific age. In their extensive investigation in 2005, Lamari et al. found that mobility decreased with increasing ageAge i, among the 1120 children, even in the narrow rangeRange i of their ages. On the basis of these observations, it was possible to confirm that the parameters and criteria used to assess jointJoint i mobility were applicable to all age groups, including adults and children. In this context, Lamari et al. also suggested that it would be appropriate for the current scoring scales to be revised." @default.
