This chapter discusses only the stepper-motor and the switched-reluctance-motor drives. Reluctance motors operate by generating reluctance torque. This requires that the reluctance in the magnetic-flux path be different along the various axes. The chapter briefly reviews three basic categories of stepper-motors: variable-reluctance motors, permanent-magnet motors, and hybrid motors. It discusses the use of power electronic converters for stepper-motors. The chapter briefly looks at the basic principles of switched-reluctance-motor operation and explains how it is possible to control them in an encoder-less manner. Magnetic saturation plays an important role in switched-reluctance-motor drives. The chapter also discusses the determination of the rotor position for encoder-less operation of switched-reluctance-motor drives." @default.
