- W4386401102 abstract "Insects are small animals that have three body regions, six segmented legs, two antennae, and two wings. They are very conspicuous in every ecosystem and are repelled out of man’s assets or killed with agrochemical (insecticide) when they are perceived as a nuisance, pest, and/or vector, capable of causing economic damage. They are only cherished when they are used as food, feed, or specimen for cultural, and aesthetic values. In agroecosystems or agricultural storage facilities, they are never accepted because they are envisaged as pests, capable of affecting crop yield, value, and quality of stored crops. The conception of insects as pests has necessitated the excessive use of insecticides by farmers to kill them within their farms and storage facilities in a bid to protect crops. Unfortunately, the use of insecticides in agroecosystem has negatively impacted faunal biodiversity and killed more beneficial insects than the targeted insect pests. It leads to faunal alteration, which in turn causes soil fertility depletion hence, creating room for the use of synthetic fertilizers and soil enhancers (agrochemicals) for a bountiful yield. The continued use of agrochemicals for any purpose has impacted the health status of the environment, human beings, and other animals. The deleterious implications of the use of agrochemicals have become so overwhelming hence, demanding an urgent switch to sustainable alternatives without affecting food security, and impacting the environment, human, and animal health. Insect farming, an act of rearing desired insects in captivity to produce more cherished stage(s) of the insects in a large scale, promises to be a sustainable tool for mitigating the use and implications of agrochemicals in agroecosystems. In this chapter, the prospects of insect farming in augmenting food security would be appraised. A review of the implications of insecticides and fertilizers on the environment, animal health, soil quality, and biodiversity would be highlighted. The place of insect farming for animal protein, against plant protein production, would be postulated, and substituting the use of agrochemicals with by-products of insect farming would be succinctly discussed as a sustainable alternative." @default.
