- W4386401111 abstract "Fish is a good source of protein and a major component in the diet of inhabitants of riverine areas. However, the presence and survival of fish is dictated by the quality and quantity of the water bodies. Anthropogenic activities like agrochemical application in farmlands near water bodies play a major role in water quality and quantity as well as in the health and composition of fish in these water bodies. Wastes and by-products from human activities are either disposed of directly or indirectly into some water bodies causing diverse effects. A predominant activity around water bodies is agriculture as farmers often channel the water for irrigation. Conversely, farmers may use agrochemicals on farmlands because of their quick action in suppressing weed and pest population. The potential danger to the aquatic and terrestrial environment is connected to runoffs which may end up in water bodies, thereby affecting the ecosystem quality and biodiversity. In aquatic ecosystems, a major effect is oxygen depletion and ultimately other physiological, histological, and behavioral disorders, and lesions. Erratic movement and migration may be observed in certain cases and may vary depending on the quantity, type, duration, and class of agrochemical used. Bioaccumulation of heavy metals may occur in the fish tissues thereby leading to health hazards when consumed by humans, and negating the target of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2 (UNSDG) which emphasizes “good nutrition and improved well-being for humans.” The use of recommended dosages of agrochemicals, the creation of buffer zones, and the use of environmentally friendly agrochemicals are some measures that may be employed for sustainable management. This will ensure the sustainability of the environment and fish composition as emphasized by Goals 14 (life in water) and 15 (life on land) of UNSDG. This chapter highlights the various agrochemicals used, their dosages, and effects on water quality and fish species composition as well as sustainable water management strategies." @default.
