- W4386447088 abstract "Integrating mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) into mobile communication infrastructures is one of development of future wireless networks. Due to the mobility of nodes, MAC protocol’s adaptability becomes an issue. Tuning protocol parameters according to the specific requirements of MANET applications has been studied for some times, while optimizing the composition of MAC protocol mechanisms according to network environments is a new research trend to enable MAC protocols to be adaptive to dynamic environments. This paper compares such two types of schemes proposed in our early works in terms of their adaptability in dynamic networks: an intelligent backoff selection scheme and a realtime MAC protocol construction scheme. The former scheme optimizes protocol parameters, while the latter is the modification of protocol functional modules. The Q-learning based backoff selection scheme can adaptively make decisions by evaluating rewards and variable learning parameters. In the latter scheme, MAC mechanisms (MMs) of traditional protocols are extracted, and selected by a learning system through evaluating rewards to dynamically construct a new protocol according to the communication scenario requirements. Simulation results show that the intelligent schemes achieve significant performance improvement for both network throughput and channel access delay, and the MAC construction scheme has strong environmental adaptability over the parameter adjustment protocol." @default.
