- W4386462178 abstract "Invasive fungal infections are a rising concern due to the emergence of antimycotic resistance and the increased number of individuals living with immunodeficiency-causing health conditions. Development of antifungal vaccines is, therefore, considered a high priority for public health. Polysaccharides are one of the main components of fungal cell walls, representing an obvious target for vaccine development. Since polysaccharides are T-independent antigens, conjugation to carrier proteins or peptides providing the T-cell epitope is required for inducing a long-lasting immune response. Extracted polysaccharides, together with synthetic well-defined oligosaccharides, have contributed to elucidate the fungal glycans' role in mediating a protective immune response in vitro and in vivo . Based on these findings, glycoconjugate vaccines against the three main fungal pathogens ( Candida spp., Cryptococcus neoformans , and Aspergillus fumigatus ) have been explored at preclinical level, providing a scientific rationale for the clinical development of antifungal vaccines based on glycans." @default.
