- W4386468327 abstract "Reinforced concrete haunched or tapered beams are beams with varying depths along their span, typically representing the pier cap of bridges. Experimental data on these beams have been collected since 1922. A comprehensive review and analysis of the shear strength behavior of haunched beams were conducted based on the gathered data. The research consisted of three main parts. The first part involved a review of general beam behavior and a discussion of data using various variables. The second part focused on evaluating the shear capacities of tapered beams using seven different shear models, and six commonly used design codes from around the world. In the final part and by combining the effects that influence shear strength, equations were proposed based on the plotted available data on a scatter graph. The safest line was selected to derive the shear design equation. The findings indicated that increasing haunched angles resulted in significant changes in shear behavior for both smaller and larger spans. Some shear models showed exaggerated predictions of capacities, except for those derived from design codes. Overall, the design codes were deemed safe for designing reinforced concrete tapered beams, with varying safety margins. However, the Indian code exhibited poor performance in the design of these beams. Ultimately, despite the wide range of variables included in the available data, the proposed equation demonstrated good agreement with experimental shear results and successfully passed all statistical and logical evaluations." @default.
