- W4386478839 abstract "The worldwide chaos caused by the SARS-CoV-2 disease (COVID-19) in late 2019 impacted many sectors globally. In the Caribbean region, traditional teaching was affected by the sudden closure, followed by a transition to emergency remote teaching (ERT). Institutions invested in training of instructors to make a smooth transition to online delivery, but what happens when your instructors are all part-time? This case study describes the experiences and preparedness of instructors at the Barbados Institute of Management and Productivity (BIMAP) as they pivoted towards remote teaching. All instructors are part-time, as the institute harnesses real-life experiences of business professionals from the public and private sectors. An online survey and semi-structured interviews analysed responses and extracted themes. Of the 60 instructors contracted, 32 (53%) participated in the online survey. Half of them lacked the requisite pedagogical competence or inclination that was fundamental for effective teaching practices. In all, 13 instructors were deemed prepared for the transition to ERT. The interviews with seven instructors revealed that while most had no preference for either online or the physical classroom, they missed the face-to-face social experiences and felt a technology barrier between themselves and students. Nevertheless, they enjoyed the benefits of minimal travel for classes. Instructors also used the learning management platform as a repository of content thus replicating the face-to-face teaching modality. Future research could compare the experiences of part-time instructors in other organisations who offer professional development or vocational training." @default.
