- W4386542822 abstract "The presence of acrylamide in water is a concern for both the environment and public health due to its increasingly widespread use. Exposure to water acrylamide mainly occurs via ingestion or dermal contact. Acrylamide is known as a carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic material with the potential to cause nervous system damage and weakness of the limbs. Acrylamide, an unsaturated amide and the main monomer of polyacrylamides (PAMs) is used as flocculants in drinking water clarification and in municipal or industrial effluents treatment; and as a grouting agent in dams, wells, and reservoirs. Acrylamide can be easily released into water resources from these areas of use and also from plastic, paint, and pulp factories since it is highly soluble and mobile in water. Its absorption by fish or plants from acrylamide-contaminated water is negligible. Although acrylamide in the water cannot be removed by conventional water treatment processes; its concentration can be reduced by treatment with ozone or potassium permanganate. The use of acrylamide as a nitrogen and carbon source by bacteria is the main degradation mechanism of acrylamide in water." @default.
