- W4386548974 abstract "Biomaterials are essential components of rapidly developing bioscience where materials are employed for providing solutions to restore function and facilitate healing to patients after injury or disease. From the class of synthetic biopolymers, polycaprolactone (PCL) is an integral polymer with a hydrophobic, liner, and semicrystalline nature exhibiting wide application in tissue engineering as well as drug delivery. PCL is industrially manufactured through ring-opening polymerization process of seven-membered cyclic structured rings of caprolactone by the number of catalysts; primarily used catalysts are metals, enzymes, and organic compounds. The characteristic features of PCL are nontoxic, inert, biocompatible nature, good miscibility with other polymers, mechanical stability, and low immunogenicity. PCL has high biocompatibility with cells and improved therapeutic efficiency, which makes them appropriate for drug delivery, biocompatibility, and cell proliferation along with nontoxic products capable of developing scaffolds used in tissue engineering applications. Besides tissue engineering and drug delivery, PCL is used in wound healing and sutures. This chapter provides a detailed study of PCL in the biomedical field along with properties contributing to medical applications as well as basic synthesis methods of PCL." @default.
