- W4386548992 abstract "Silicone is a polymeric material that has been extensively utilized in the field of biomedicine as biomedical implant because of its superior mechanical characteristics and biocompatibility. Silicones, like polydimethylsiloxane, are biocompatible, unreactive, nondegradable polymeric materials with a silicon-oxygen-silicon (Si-O-Si) connection in the backbone. Silicones are widely utilized in a variety of medical applications, including soft tissue implantable devices, microfluidic devices, heart valves, etc. The key periods of silicone’s progress are depicted in a timeline with examples from various biomedical applications. The characteristics of silicone are explained in this chapter along with a number of biomedical uses, such as implants for the metatarsophalangeal joint, drains and shunts, urinary catheters, contact lens, and medical inserts. When exposed to bacteria, silicones are highly susceptible to microbial pathogens and interactions with the host tissue. The final section of the book discusses how silicone implants interact with soft and bone tissue as well as different antimicrobial tactics, such as surface treatment, physiological or chemical alterations, antibiotic treatment, or surfaces that are activated by plasma, to build bacterial infection resistance." @default.
