- W4386628711 abstract "This chapter will review and highlight the role that virtual reality, simulation and computer game technology can perform within the field of visual impairments. There is a recognised need for the development of effective approaches to educate the wider public about how certain visual impairments will present themselves and to raise awareness of the importance of seeking early treatment to ensure optimal long-term outcomes. This need to raise awareness does not only apply to individuals who already have or are at risk of developing a visual impairment but also to the wider society. Virtual reality simulation and computer game technology can perform a variety of roles that can help to solve these problems related to understanding and treatment of visual impairments. Virtual reality technology can, for example, perform a role as assistive technology, enabling visually impaired people to understand and experience the world around them more easily. The chapter discusses the opportunities and challenges that relate to the development and use of virtual reality simulations and game technology in relation to visual impairments." @default.
