- W4386700712 abstract "Leg-preference refers to asymmetry in leg function in favor of one leading side (Peters,1988) and considered to be a more accurate predictor of cerebral lateralization than hand-preference (Gabbard & Iteya, 1996).The age at which leg-preference is established is a subject of debate (Bacelar & Teixeira, 2015; Gentry & Gabbard, 1995). Defining leg-preference is challenging as its expression in bilateral tasks is clearer than in tasks that is performed in a uni-lateral context (Bacelar & Teixeira, 2015). These gaps require further examination regarding the effect of task type on leg-preference degree and consistency. To examine the manifestation of leg-preference among 7-year-old children while systematically examining the effect of the characteristics of the task in 5 categories: bilateral versus unilateral context; movement versus stabilization: the involvement of object manipulation; continuous tasks versus serial and discrete tasks; performing the task while standing versus sitting. Participant were 34 typically developing right-handed children (53% girls) aged 7 years, who completed a ten leg-preference tasks battery ( Slalom drill, goal kick in sitting and standing, putting a marble into a cup in sitting and standing, rubber spring stamping and jumping, one leg standing, one step and one leg standing, half-kneeling to stand). Each task was preformed 10 times. Preference degree and direction were calculated by preference index (PI): (R +L)/( R -L) (Number of Right leg leads + Number of Left leg leads)/(Number of Right leg leads; (Atun-Einy, 2016). Most (86%) of the children demonstrated a strong right leg-preference (PI<0.51). Preference degree varied between tasks, when out of 10 tasks 6 generated a strong preference (PI 0.51-1), while four a medium-low preference (PI 0–0.5). Correlations between tasks that had a leading movement component were medium to large (range is.39-.83) while the stabilization task correlations to other tasks were small to insignificant. Significant differences in the expression of preference between the different task categories were found between: bilateral versus unilateral tasks (Z=-2.55, p<0.05; d = 0.44); movement versus stabilization tasks (Z=-3.21, p<0.05; d =0.58); tasks with or without object manipulation and tasks with involvement of an object but with power (χ2 (2)=18.55, p<0.001); Continuous, serial and discrete tasks (χ2(2) =15.89, p<0.001). No differences were found between matching tasks in standing and sitting. Our results showed that leg-preference is well established in 7-year-old right handed children. In bilateral, mobilizing, and manipulating tasks leg-preference was consistent, compared to a complex and less consistent expression in unilateral stabilization tasks. This indicates that the expression of leg-preference in children with typical development is dynamic and influenced by certain task characteristics and thus can provide a frame of reference for children with motor difficulties." @default.
