• W4386706645 abstract "Industrial grain drying utilizes approximately 12–25% of the total energy in the manufacturing processes, thereby contributing to a large-scale carbon footprint. However, when it comes to on-farm grain drying, there is limited information that directly correlates the energy expenses with greenhouse gas emissions. It is vital to view farm-scale grain management operations with a lens capturing product quality, process efficiency, and sustainability. This review outlines the United Nations’ sustainable development goals 7 and 13 that ensure positive impact of reliable energy sources on climate change associated with grain drying processes. The major drying approaches considered include solar drying, natural air drying, low-temperature drying with heaters, and high-temperature drying. Process efficiency metrics such as energy and carbon dioxide equivalent per unit of energy consumption are discussed. In addition, the use of various fuel options in a commercial operation with a 500-tonne capacity grain dryer is assessed to analyze sustainability. Lastly, the importance of energy system modeling to reveal environmentally benign operations is discussed. This work will help farmers and policy makers understand the level of complexity within the grain drying system that will include impacts of on-farm-scale operations on grain quality and process efficiency to help make better management decisions for cleaner environment." @default.
