- W4386757341 abstract "As I prepared to start the anesthesia care for a heart transplant recipient, I began to chat with my patient who happened to be a black male. We discovered that we were both originally from Virginia. As the trainee prepared to place a preinduction arterial line, the patient looked at me and said “I’m glad you’re here. They don’t steal folks’ organs down here, do they?” I smiled and said, “of course not.” I was immediately reminded of a book I read about a year ago. “The Organ Thieves: The Shocking Story of the First Heart Transplant in the Segregated South” tells the story of a black man who was admitted to the hospital at the Medical College of Virginia (MCV), now Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine, in 1968 after a head injury.1 Subsequently, his heart was transplanted into a white businessman without his or his family’s consent. In fact, his brother was never even notified by the hospital that he had been admitted. Growing up in Virginia, I often heard people say, “they steal organs up in Richmond.” At the time, it sounded crazy to me, but I would eventually learn that it was more than just folklore. As a native Virginian, medical school graduate of the Medical College of Virginia, and black anesthesiologist who participates in heart and lung transplantation regularly, this book had a major effect on me. Why had I never heard about this as a medical student? We were often taught about the history of the institution, but not this. It was well known to students that the school was instrumental in advances in early organ transplantation, but not the story of the circumstances surrounding the donor involved in one of the first heart transplants performed in the country. MCV was lauded as the only medical school in the country that graduated doctors during the civil war and was still in existence today; the White House of the Confederacy even sits on the campus. History was everywhere in Richmond, but not this. VCU has recently acknowledged and apologized for its past practices and even selected “The Organ Thieves” as common reading for incoming undergraduate students.2 It is no secret that black bodies were often experimented on without consent. The most famous is that of the case of Henrietta Lacks. Her HeLa cells have been instrumental in the advancement of medicine ranging from vaccine development to in vitro fertilization to cancer treatment. Johns Hopkins has since acknowledged her contributions and even named a building after her. Although the past cannot be changed, it is important that these stories are told. In the spirit of inclusion, medical contributions of those from marginalized communities must be recognized regardless of the circumstances. Black bodies matter not only in life but also in death. There are likely countless cases like this whose names we may never know. But when we know the name, as in this story, we must say it. His name was Bruce Tucker." @default.
