- W4386762258 abstract "A constant supply of oxygen is required by eukaryotic organisms for the production of cellular energy. All vertebrates, including fishes, can sense changing levels of oxygen in the environment using specialized cells called oxygen chemoreceptors. Once stimulated by reduced oxygen levels, these oxygen chemoreceptors initiate appropriate cardiorespiratory responses so as to avoid ischemic tissue damage and cell death. In this article, the process of O2 “sensing” will be described in fish, which possess such chemoreceptors in the gills. Discussion will focus on what is currently known of the cellular mechanism of O2 sensing, and what is not yet understood. This will include how O2 levels may be detected, the transduction of the hypoxic stimulus into an electrical signal at the cell membrane, and neurochemical communication between chemoreceptors and the nervous system. Where appropriate, comparisons will be made with studies from the mammalian literature to produce a comparative picture of O2 sensing in vertebrates." @default.
