- W4386770185 abstract "The concept of “wenxue” in modern Chinese is derived from its English translation “literature” and is generally believed to have become established through the works of Japanese scholars, according to Lu Xun. Although Federico Masini, Lydia H. Liu and other scholars have challenged Lu Xun’s view, they make the mistake of chronological misplacement. Via a historical process of conceptual transmission, the concept of “wenxue” was created and stereotyped in three stages: (1) Its use in Chinese classical terminology, (2) missionaries arriving in China in the late Qing dynasty and (3) the works of Japanese scholars. The process was complicated by the entanglement of “wenxue” with other Chinese cultural concepts such as wenzhang and wen." @default.
