Der animalische Magnetismus des Arztes Franz Anton Mesmer wird nicht mehr als Vorläufer dessen verstanden, was wir heute als das psychologische Verfahren der Hypnotherapie bezeichnen. Hierfür könnte eher der durch seinen Schüler Puységur begründete Somnambulismus dienen, der ab 1800 in der romantischen Medizin an Einfluss gewann. Der Hypnotismus des schottischen Arztes Braid ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts und die Suggestionstheorie der Schule von Nancy (Bernheim und Liébeault) Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts prägen noch heute wesentliche Aspekte der Hypnose. In Form des autogenen Trainings (J.H. Schultz) verharrte Hypnose speziell in Deutschland als eine Art Entspannungstechnik, bis 1976 die Hypnotherapie Milton H. Ericksons bekannt wurde. In US-Amerika zeigte sich William James Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts – analog zum „goldenen Zeitalter der Hypnose“ in Europa – an Hypnose interessiert und 30 Jahre später auch Clark Hull, bei dem Erickson noch studiert hatte. Hulls Untersuchungen zur hypnotischen Suggestibilität nahmen André Weitzenhoffer und Ernest Hilgard Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts wieder auf und stießen damit eine intensive wissenschaftliche Beschäftigung mit den verschiedenen Aspekten der Hypnose an, die sich bis heute fortsetzt. Die therapeutische Anwendung der Hypnose verlief analog zu diesen Epochen und ist heute durch die Hypnotherapie Milton Ericksons geprägt." @default.
