Algae are a broad set of aquatic organisms that are efficient and capable of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and creating high-productivity oil, which has a wide range of possible uses in the production of biofuel (BF), also known as third-generation biofuel. These BFs are the best substitute for the current scenario since they can reduce the majority of the ecological issues instigated by traditional fossil fuels (FFs). Microalgae (MA) biofuel has been highlighted as one of the primary renewable energy resources for environmental sustainability, offering the possibility to substitute fossil-based fuels, as per life cycle assessment. Furthermore, the unique characteristics of microalgae, such as increased biomass production, rich oil content, no need for acreage, and convenient farming in wastewaters combined with CO2 extenuation, make them one of the most viable alternatives for the production of algal biofuels, including a broad array of substances with the potency to act as sources of environmentally friendly fuels, such as biodiesel, straight vegetable oil (SVO), lipids, ethanol hydrogen, and so on. This chapter explains the technologies that support microalgae-to-biofuels systems, focusing on microalgae harvesting, conversion technologies, etc. In addition, numerous advantages and downsides of microalgae biofuel production are also highlighted." @default.
