What you don't see is that we are after beauty like waves crashing on rocks. Like the visible, a thin film, draining over sound. Like the future drifting over the present and the past crackling like life. The world takes what it wants; we take what we can. The past sucks like the tide, the jealous tongues of the dead. The future is the prerogative of the young, Spirit bidding for the unthinkable. A griot tells a story that collapses time, resurrects the dead, extracts the lead. This is a poem. This is a journey. Some won. The sea dances in the sun. The sun dances on the rocks. The see walks across the sea. Who wins? Get him. Pay me. Pay hymn. The sea washed me of my sins. My art is to return. The wrinkled sea, like milk skin, holds my steps. I step down molten rock into the heart's wet depths. I return to where you are. My salt is on your skin. I can begin again. End begets again.
