- W4386803405 abstract "This chapter argues that including alternative modes of reasoning such as narrative arguments is one way of resisting the Eurocentrism found in dominant accounts of argumentation. Storytelling plays a crucial role in Indigenous and African philosophy. However, African and Indigenous philosophy are denied the credibility that they deserve and are not seen as legitimate philosophy. This problem is due to the way argument is defined and how the philosophical method is conceptualized. The dominant mode of arguing is problematic for three main reasons: first, it marginalises alternative modes of reasoning and experiencing the world; second, it fuels colonialist thinking, which is salient in philosophy; and third, it hinders genuine intercultural dialogue. Broadening our concept of arguments to include narrative and non-standard modes enriches the philosophical method and helps include marginalized voices in the sphere of argumentation." @default.
