- W4386819256 abstract "The aim of this chapter is to analyze the foundations of community-based learning with a focus on the philosophical views, educational aims, and associated value dimensions in India. In addition, the aim is to examine the changing nature of the pedagogical activities of community-based learning and their authentic learning environments in India. The analysis concentrates particularly on the activities of community-based learning and their central pedagogical approaches in a context of social change. This chapter shows that in India the philosophical tradition of such learning is related to the ideas of neo-traditional education and relies on a tradition that insists on truth included in the philosophy of satyagraha. The chapter shows that in the late 1930s India started to focus efforts on expanding learning environments from schools to the real world outside of schools. This tradition gave particular importance to sociomoral aims and socioethical and universal values, while the primary focus is on vocationally productive education. The chapter reveals that in the 1960s development in India started to stress school-centered intellectual aims and science- and technology-related values, while community-based learning allowed experts to be trained for an advanced society in which mental work was to be performed in modern production. This chapter also demonstrates that community-based learning can take place in a variety of learning environments prioritizing the Sociocultural, Productive, Scientific-Agricultural, or Scientific-Technical Dimensions, in accordance with the general direction of political, economic, and social development. During the past six decades, pedagogical approaches and their learning environments have increasingly given special importance to the use of technology-based applications. The study concludes that approaches to community-based learning could provide a way for schools to integrate instruction into students’ lives and communities and help them apply what they learned at school to practices in their daily life." @default.
