- W4386869551 abstract "Wyatt’s Rebellion against Mary I, coming just six months after Edward VI’s attempt to thwart her accession in favor of Jane Grey, buttresses the claim that she, her marriage to Philip of Spain, and her Catholic faith were unpopular and that in 1554 she already was ‘Bloody Mary.’ Yet for the second time many of her subjects rallied to support her legitimacy, and she was lenient to all but the rebel leaders, as the Tudors usually were. Memory of the rebellion has been contested from the beginning. Mary and her council suspected her sister of involvement, which Elizabeth and Wyatt himself denied. Wyatt disavowed a religious motive, a claim echoed by his son George and others, while John Foxe portrayed him as a Protestant martyr, and John Proctor and Nicolas Sander damned him as anti-Catholic. Among modern scholars, David Loades downplays religion, Barrett Beer and Malcolm Thorp emphasize Protestant disaffection, and Anthony Fletcher and Diarmaid MacCulloch balance secular and religious motives. Representation of the rebellion in fiction, film, and documentaries remains one-dimensional, superficial, and at times strikingly inaccurate. Novels tend toward romantic fantasy, films present the rebellion from Elizabeth’s point of view, and documentaries focus on Mary’s brutality. This chapter re-examines the rebellion in terms of historiography and popular culture, argues for a more nuanced interpretation, and contends that it was the most dangerous rebellion of the Tudor period." @default.
