- W4386869622 abstract "This chapter argues for the recognition of a vibrant strand of Catholic political thought that flourished following the accession of Mary Tudor, written by conservative reformers such as John Proctor, John Christopherson, and James Cancellar. It argues that this strand relied for its efficacy on tropes recurrent in a pre-Reformation branch of princely humanism, tropes such as a correlation between the personal virtue and piety of the prince and the health of the commonwealth, the use of classical and biblical exemplars as a prescriptive on princely conduct, and a promotion of the reform and renewal of Christian society as the chief duty of the ruler. Further, by recognising these inherited traits, we can better appreciate the innovations the authors of the period made to accommodate Mary’s gender as the first English queen regnant and the confessionalisation of her Church in a Reformation environment. In making such a connection, this chapter also calls for the incorporation of ‘Marian political humanism’ into the wider narratives of European political thought during the years 1553–8, where currently the story of those Protestants who wrote resistance literature against her still dominates." @default.
