- W4386870577 abstract "With the continuous growth of the world population, there is also a great demand for food supplies. Among several factors affecting crop yields, two main problems exist in the agricultural ecosystem: soil degradation and pesticide pollution. Biochar and clay, respectively, own valuable properties related to their particle size, ion exchange capacity, porosity, surface chemistry, and other physical and chemical properties, supporting their application in various fields. Adding advantages to their characteristics, both of these materials are eco-friendly, abundant in nature, and can be utilized cost-effectively. Compared with other activated carbon, biochar has a low surface area. Thus, physical and chemical modifications are required to enhance the biochar performance. The combination of biochar with clay to produce clay-biochar composites was initiated in 2014, and much research has been done ever since, mainly for environmental applications. In this chapter, the production methods, enhancement in the physical and chemical characteristics, and the applications of clay-biochar composites in the agriculture industry, such as in improving soil fertility by enhancing the efficiency of fertilizer usage and supporting the degradation of pesticides residue in the agricultural area will be summarized." @default.
