- W4386870726 abstract "In the context of widespread political polarisationPolitical polarization, this chapter explores the potential of taking an agonistic approach to Philosophy for/with ChildrenPhilosophy for/with Children (P4wC) (P4wC). AgonismAgonism offers an innovative framework for democratic educationDemocratic education founded on the recognition that, in a pluralistic democracyDemocracy, political disagreementDisagreement is ineradicable, inherently passionate and enmeshed in relations of powerRelations of power. After outlining the tenets of agonismAgonism, I briefly describe P4wC, its Community of Philosophical InquiryCommunity of Philosophical Inquiry (CPI)/(COPI) (CPI) pedagogyPedagogy and its tradition of democratic education. After arguing that the agonistic approach to democratic educationDemocratic education is broadly compatible with P4wC, I explore what “the agonistic CPICommunity of Philosophical Inquiry (CPI)/(COPI)” might look like, and envision the potential benefits to P4wCPhilosophy for/with Children (P4wC) theory and practice. My main claim in this chapter is that an agonistic lens can offer valuable pedagogical and theoretical insights, particularly around the place of conflictConflict, political issues, political emotionsEmotions and historical knowledge in P4wC. I conclude that an agonistic approach to P4wC deserves further theoretical and empirical investigation, especially in a political moment characterised by rising polarisation, passion and populism." @default.
