- W4386906355 abstract "Research results were reviewed focusing on effects and utilization of heterosis and breed differences, and on the importance of matching genetic potential with the climatic environment and consumer preferences. Effects of heterosis increases production per cow about 20–25% in Bos taurus X Bos taurus breed crosses (e.g., Angus X Hereford) and at least 50% in Bos indicus X Bos taurus breed crosses (e.g., Brahman X Shorthorn). Significant levels of heterosis can be maintained by rotational systems of crossbreeding or in composite populations. Breed differences are an important genetic resource. Genetic trends for economically important traits are presented. No one breed excels in all traits of importance to beef production. Thus, crossing of two or more breeds can be used to optimize performance levels for traits that determine carcass value. In temperate environments, genetic potential for retail product and marbling tends to be more nearly optimized in cattle with mixtures of Continental and British ancestry. To limit costs of production and improve efficiency of production, a strong influence of tropically adapted germplasm is needed in subtropical and tropical environments. In the hotter and more humid climates of the US Gulf Coast, 25–50% Bos indicus may be optimal. In harsher tropical regions of the world, even higher levels of tropically adapted germplasm may be more optimal." @default.
